British School Commemorates King Charles III’s Coronation Ceremony

  • Date May 10, 2023

British Academy School Marrakech (BASM) celebrated King Charles’ coronation ceremony on Monday with a series of extracurricular activities held throughout the city of Marrakech. One of the main activities involved the planting of trees, which symbolised the school’s commitment to environmental preservation, according to Head of School Nicola Bussetil.

This tree-planting initiative is connected to Queen Elizabeth’s Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) environmental program, which was introduced in 2021. Nicola further explained that the QGC aims to protect the environment and create a better living environment for future generations.

The teaching and administration staff at BASM expressed their support for Morocco’s efforts to adopt English as the country’s second language. They emphasised that mastering the language of global academia and business would make young Moroccans more competitive in the global labour markets.

Fatima Ghazoui, an American English teacher at the school, highlighted the importance of English proficiency, stating that it provides students with better opportunities to pursue higher education and attend international schools.

In November of last year, BASM actively participated in the Marrakech English Book Festival by hosting various activities, including exhibitions, readings, illustrations, and theatre workshops.

Deputy Head of the school Natasha Compton discussed the school’s ongoing efforts and plans in response to Morocco’s increasing focus on adopting English as its second language. She emphasised the school’s comprehensive planning, tailored learning approaches for each student, and continuous reflection to cater to individual learning needs.

Recognizing Morocco’s progress and its establishment of strong relationships with other nations, Fatima, the American teacher, praised Morocco’s promising prospects in academia and business. As English continues to be embraced by young Moroccans, the country recently announced plans to broadcast news in English on national channels. Jennifer Smith, a third-year teacher at BASM, welcomed this decision, as it would enhance accessibility to information for foreigners residing in Morocco.

Overall, BASM and its teachers are actively involved in promoting English proficiency, environmental conservation, and cultural activities, contributing to the educational and societal development of Morocco.
